Actuarial Program

Program Overview

The WellPoint Actuarial Student Program supports associates in the attainment of Fellowship in the Society of Actuaries (SOA). Participants will gain valuable exposure and experience as they progress through the SOA syllabus.

The Actuarial Student Program is designed to enhance students' ability to successfully complete the actuarial examinations by offering study time allowances and financial rewards for performance.

Eligibility

Candidates must be:

  • A full-time or part-time associate in an Actuarial Staff position, and
  • Accepted by the candidate's supervisor and SBU/CEE Senior Actuary

Benefits

  • Seasoned, successful instructors/mentors with 30-40 years of relevant experience and knowledge in the actuarial field

  • Benefits are provided to students with Active Student Status only
  • For part-time associates, study time and compensation will be pro-rated

Study Time

The schedule of hours is graded based on number of attempts at the same exam and the score on the previous attempt.

Examination Fees

The Company pays for all exam fees for one exam per 6-month period.

Exam Preparation Seminars

Students may attend one seminar per exam if certain conditions are met.

Candidate Qualifications

Successful candidates typically possess:

  • High GPA (or a combination of experience and GPA)
  • Internship experience or evidence of commitment to the actuarial career path (leadership in actuarial club, math associations, attendance at actuarial conferences, etc.)
  • Adaptability - heath insurance is not a static industry, with many government regulations and ever-evolving factors
  • Rapid learning ability - health insurance is complex, and demands the ability to ask the right questions
  • The ability to explain why you want to be an actuary within the healthcare industry
  • Effective teamwork and written/verbal communication skills
