Accounting/Finance Intern - South Portland, ME

Receive hands on experience with statutory accounting practices, generally accepted accounting principles and various reporting requirements of a national insurance company.  Working hours are flexible between 20-40 hours per week.  Current internship period is January 5, 2010 - May 31, 2010, however extensions to the internship and/or full-time employment will be considered following the initial intern period.
 
Essential duties will include, but are not limited to:
• Preparing and recording journal entries on a statutory basis
• Preparing annual financial statements for filing with state regulatory agencies
• Analyzing month end journal entries and reconciliations prepared on a GAAP basis.
• Assisting with gathering external audit support information
• Evaluating appropriateness of accounting treatment
• Participating in special projects as requested by management.

Qualifications
 
Qualified candidates must be currently enrolled in an approved academic course of study and pursuing a Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline. Other qualifications include:

• Preferred student status  is Junior or Senior

• Experience with MS Excel and Word

• Ability to learn new concepts/ tasks quickly.

• Effective oral or written communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks with varying deadlines.
• Attention to detail.
• Positive attitude and strong work ethic
